Firefox Added Local AI Form Filling — Here Is How It Works

According to The Verge, Mozilla is updating the Smart Window feature in Firefox to automate repetitive data entry. The browser can now pull history and portfolio details directly from your open tabs to complete online applications.
How Smart Window Fills Forms
When you click on any web form containing at least four text fields, Firefox displays a "Fill from sources" button. Clicking this opens a list of your open tabs, allowing you to select which pages the browser should read to extract your work history or personal details.
The system relies on Google’s Gemini 3.1 Flash Lite model to generate text suggestions. Currently, the feature handles text fields only, while support for dropdown menus and PDFs is still in development by Mozilla.
Webpage Monitoring in Action
Aside from form filling, the update introduces a tracking command. By typing /watch in the Smart Window chat, users can monitor specific sites for job listings or product sales.
- Firefox checks for updates daily or weekly, but only when the browser remains open.
- Tracking pauses automatically if no changes occur after 60 days.
- Monitoring stops completely after 90 days of inactivity.
How to Use Firefox Smart Window
To test these new capabilities, you need to be running the Firefox Smart Window desktop beta in the US or Canada. Open a form with four or more text fields, click the prompt to select your source tabs, and let the browser generate the text.
Is It Worth Using for Your Routine?
If you regularly fill out job applications or track product inventory, this native integration saves time by bypassing external extension tools. However, the requirement to keep the browser running for site monitoring and the current restriction to text fields mean it serves best as a lightweight assistant rather than an advanced automation platform.
