According to an Ars Technica report on Mozilla’s latest State of Open Source AI findings, paying for closed frontier AI models buys a performance head start of just 4.4 months. Yet, this early access comes at roughly five times the per-task cost of using open-weights models.
When do closed AI models justify the cost?
Mozilla CTO Raffi Krikorian points out that closed models earn their high price tag only in specific scenarios. These include expert professional work, high-intensity retrieval, and long context windows. For routine tasks, open models have largely closed the capability gap.

Organizations are increasingly adopting a hybrid approach. For example, delivery company DoorDash uses open models for standard day-to-day operations while routing harder tasks to proprietary systems. If a deadline falls before open-weights models catch up to a specific capability, paying the premium makes sense. Otherwise, waiting four months cuts operational costs drastically.
“Pay when that head start is worth it, something like a deadline that lands before the open frontier catches up would be here,” Raffi Krikorian told Ars.
