Exchange rate questions
What is the PTAX rate?
It's the official exchange rate calculated and published by Brazil's Central Bank every business day, based on an average of interbank foreign exchange operations. It's the reference used in contracts, accounting statements and for tax purposes.
Why is this different from the rate I see at my bank or exchange bureau?
Banks, exchange bureaus and international cards charge a spread (margin) on top of the PTAX rate, plus a tax (IOF) on some operations. PTAX is the 'raw' reference, without those commercial margins.
Why doesn't the rate change if I pick a weekend?
There's no currency trading on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. In those cases, the tool automatically shows the rate from the last available business day before the chosen date.
Where does the rate data come from?
Directly from Brazil's Central Bank, through BrasilAPI (a free, open aggregator of official public data).
