Seguro-desemprego (unemployment insurance) is a temporary benefit for employees dismissed without cause, calculated from the average of the last 3 salaries. The number of installments and the minimum months worked required both depend on how many times you've claimed the benefit before.

Frequently asked questions
Who is eligible for unemployment insurance?
Employees dismissed without cause, who meet the minimum work period required (12 months on the first claim, 9 on the second, 6 from the third onward) within the last 18, 12, or 6 months, respectively.
Why is there a cap on the value?
The benefit is calculated in brackets based on the average salary, with a fixed maximum value (the cap) for anyone earning above a certain amount — it's not simply an uncapped percentage of the salary.
Does resigning entitle you to unemployment insurance?
No. The benefit is exclusive to dismissal without cause by the employer. Anyone who resigns or is dismissed for cause is not entitled to it.
Why do I need to say how many times I've claimed it before?
Because the minimum months-worked requirement gets lower with each new claim — 12 months the first time, 9 the second, and just 6 from the third time onward.
