Férias (vacation) is the right to 30 days of paid rest per year worked, plus a 1/3 bonus on the salary (the "constitutional third"). Instead of taking all 30 days off, it's possible to sell up to 10 of them back to the employer — the abono pecuniário.

Frequently asked questions
What is the constitutional third (terço constitucional)?
It's a 1/3 bonus added to the salary value, paid together with vacation pay, guaranteed by the Brazilian Constitution (art. 7, XVII). That's why 30 days of vacation pay out to more than a full salary.
What is abono pecuniário?
It's selling up to 10 days of vacation back to the employer, under CLT art. 143. The employee works those days and receives the equivalent value (with the third) in cash instead of time off.
Does selling vacation days mean less money?
No. The total gross value is the same either way — the difference is that abono pecuniário is exempt from INSS and income tax, while regular vacation pay has those deductions, just like a normal salary.
Can I sell more than 10 vacation days?
No. The one-third limit (10 of 30 days) is fixed by law — it's not negotiable between employer and employee.
