According to The Decoder, OpenAI is rolling out a new advertising format that displays product carousels during the image generation loading phase in ChatGPT. The test launches this month for an initial group of advertisers in the US.
How do the new ChatGPT image ads work?
The display ads appear directly below the image that ChatGPT is actively generating, taking up the dead time users spend waiting for visual outputs. According to OpenAI, these placements show products in use or related experiences, and they remain visually separated from the generated asset itself.
What does this mean for your workflow?
If you use ChatGPT to quickly prototype visual ideas or assets during the workday, the loading screen will now double as commercial space. While the pause during image rendering is typically brief, filling it with targeted carousels shifts the tool's interface further into an advertising-supported ecosystem, mirroring platforms like social media feeds.
How is OpenAI measuring ad performance?
OpenAI is integrating measurement tools through partners like Hightouch, Tealium, and LiveRamp to handle conversion data. Attribution providers such as AppsFlyer, Adjust, and Branch are also joining the platform, alongside geo-based impact testing with Haus, Measured, and WorkMagic.
