Google announced the phase-out of Gemini Gems, the feature launched in 2024 for building task-specific AI assistants. According to TechCrunch and Tecnoblog, the shutdown happens on November 17, 2026, and existing configurations will automatically transition to a new skills framework tied to the Gemini Spark ecosystem.
How will the transition affect daily workflows?
Users will not need to rebuild their custom assistants from scratch because Google handles the migration automatically. However, the interaction model changes. As noted by TechCrunch, instead of tapping a dedicated menu item, users must type a forward slash ("/") inside a chat thread to select a skill—a design choice closer to developer tools than consumer interfaces.
What remains uncertain about the new skills system?
Tecnoblog points out that Google has yet to clarify how free-tier users will access these skills. Currently, similar advanced adjustments are restricted to subscribers of the Google AI Pro or Ultra plans through the Spark tab, leaving casual users with potential access roadblocks once Gems disappear.
