According to The Verge, Shopify is expanding its agentic commerce strategy by opening its massive catalog to virtually any consumer AI shopping assistant. Rather than restricting automation to exclusive partnerships like Meta's Muse, shoppers can now link independent AI agents directly to their personal Shop accounts.

How AI shopping works on Shopify

To use the new feature, customers connect an external AI agent to the Shop app, a centralized platform owned by Shopify that manages orders, tracking, and product discovery. Once connected, the agent gains browsing access to over a billion listings across Shopify storefronts.

When the assistant finds a matching item, checkout happens directly inside the conversation using the one-click Shop Pay infrastructure. Every transaction funnels back into the user's Shop app for centralized tracking and fulfillment.

Guardrails and human control

Autonomous purchasing requires strict limits to prevent runaway spending. Shopify allows users to act as managers by giving their AI personal shoppers specific rules, such as maximum budget caps or mandatory fast-shipping filters.

Critically, full autonomy is kept in check: buyers must manually approve each individual purchase before any money changes hands. This prevents unintended transactions while letting software handle the tedious catalog-browsing phase.
