According to TechCrunch, Shopify introduced Canvas to let merchants build and manage online stores through a conversational interface powered by the Sidekick AI agent.

How does Shopify Canvas change store development?

Traditional site builders require rearranging modular blocks inside a chosen theme, forcing merchants to touch code or hire a developer for deeper customizations. Canvas replaces this workflow by allowing users to instruct Sidekick directly via chat while viewing real-time updates.

What happens under the hood during AI edits?

TechCrunch reports that Canvas does not just show a static preview. The platform renders the actual code behind the store, meaning merchants can test animations, full interactivity, and responsiveness across devices immediately. Sidekick also takes automated screenshots to keep visual track of the workspace alongside the user.

To make this possible, Shopify restructured its theme architecture and granted Sidekick direct access to theme files. Merchants can still click and edit specific elements manually, but the primary interaction shifts entirely to natural language.
